Do you have any specific questions Martin? There's a lot to say.

Well, I'm not sure how to take the meaning of verse 14, given the rest of the chapter and the Matthew reference. That'd be a start. In fact, I don't really know the background of chapter 7 in the whole history of Israel.

In simple terms, Isaiah saw way beyond his contemporary situation (8th century BC) to a time when salvation would come through David's line.

It is not right to say he foresaw a virgin for the word translated could mean 'young girl'. He simply saw something bigger happeneing than his own understanding could grasp, through a childbirth.

The prophecy must have been seen to have had fulfilment once for it to be written down in the collection of Isaiah's writings. Later, people saw it coming to complete fulfilment in Jesus of Nazareth.

Isaiah 1:1 gives you the historical background to Isaiah 1-39 and that is covered in 2 Kings 15-18 or so.

It is at the time when the kingdom of God's people had divided into two, after 931 BC. The north is confusingly still called Israel and the south is called Judah. Isaiah 1-39 is prophesied from Judah and based around 735BC.

Alec Motyer's commentary (IVOP1993) is brilliant but expensive.

Hope this helps.
