The Jahn-Teller Effect and Unsold's Theorem
Abstract
This report details a theoretical investigation into the Jahn-Teller Effect, and in particular how this effects an octahedral structure centred around a Cr2+ ion. First the lattice ion coupling is found using group theory. Then Unsolds' theorem is used to generate the potential of these coupling terms. The normal modes of the system are then investigated. Next the spin orbit coupling is introduced as a small perturbation, and finally the energy levels for the system are found.
